Summary
What this is
A digital form, printed maps and a field sequence for walking agricultural plots with the people who farm them and recording fruit trees as a georeferenced layer. The toolkit also holds an executive summary of arboricultural cultivation techniques, so that people without specialist knowledge can take part, and a specification sheet for describing species and cultivars.
What problem it was made for
The fruit-tree biodiversity of Monti Prenestini survives on field margins, in gardens and on abandoned plots without being catalogued. The form follows the data criteria of ARSIAL's Voluntary Regional Register of Plant Genetic Resources, so that records can support the recognition of local varieties.
Where it came from
Shaping the Ground, Monti Prenestini, October 2024 — the first activation of the territorial lab proposed by Transitioning a Landscape. 542 trees of 19 species were mapped on 9.3 hectares belonging to three farmers.
How to use it
The calendar and impact framework in the Challenge corpus describe the week-by-week sequence. Test the form on a sample area first, map every fruit tree in a plot rather than a selection, and plan an offline or paper version where there is no connection.
Reuse
The report proposes applying the method at the request of local stakeholders, such as Viviamo Rocca di Cave's census of walnut trees for a Register application. License to be confirmed.
