We live in an age that requires us to re-evaluate every assumption. The way we work is changing. The way we build community is changing. Our environment itself is changing, radically.
The last century was devoted to the consolidating of a pre-established social and economic order. Today, a different problem awaits resolution. We must find a new way to live together. A way that promotes social cohesion, that broadens access to the abundant future ahead, and that is built upon a sustainable relationship with our environment. Accelerating changes in media and technology over the past four decades have drastically changed the world. However, the way we lead life in society has yet to come to terms with this change. We have yet to take advantage of the doors that have been opened.
The 20th century rewarded centralization, but the benefits of this trend are waning. Currently populated by more than 8 billion people, the world is more urban than ever. Yet, the next generation finds itself squeezed out of space in the modern metropolis. Our metropolitan culture is suffering from sclerosis, unable to accommodate the world becoming. Meanwhile, the weakened ecosystem of smaller urbanities is now a liminal space. A space where the future is being creatively and collectively reconceived.

Liminal was born out of a desire to reimagine the relevance of small cities, towns, and villages that have experienced decades of depopulation and disinvestment in Italy. Our members are driven by an image of prosperity, equity, and environmental harmony for extra-metropolitan territories. Where quality of life, opportunity and a deep sense of purpose are not mutually exclusive for those who will come after us.
We believe that achieving this begins in places that are often overlooked, but where communities already understand the urgency of overcoming the status quo. It means investing in innovative models that foster polycentric development; models that allow individual identities and traditions to truly flourish while maintaining a high degree of interconnectedness.

We believe that tackling the most difficult problems of our time requires bringing together a driven pool of talent with diverse curiosities and expertise. We need to look at the realities on the ground with fresh eyes; with passion, creativity, and unbridled imagination. We need spaces where we can get things wrong, and where, one mistake at a time, we can slowly pivot toward innovative solutions that will address the issues that we care about.
Liminal is home to a group of people who believe in a shared future, each confident that they have something unique to offer the larger community. Our membership is made up of people who think big, but allow themselves to be humbled by the myriad of challenges that stand between them and their goal. People who cultivate the patience necessary to build for the long haul, but act with agility and savviness in the present. Hard-working team players who proactively take matters into their own hands.
