liminal is a research, design and consultancy group that uses a multi-disciplinary approach to tackle the challenges that lie ahead for the Italian countryside in the coming century.

liminal is made up of experts and professionals in the fields of sustainable development, urban planning, architecture, landscape, economics, data-analytics and law.

What do we do?

 

Liminal works with local communities, private agencies and government authorities to reimagine the future of rural communities in Italy struggling with depopulation, disinvestment, degrading infrastructure, and mounting environmental stresses. We partner with committed stakeholder–large and small–to catalyze actionable changes that can transform the future of these territories through research, design and consultancy.

By employing an innovative multi-disciplinary approach grounded on an understanding of the spatial and material realities of these places, we believe we can make a unique contribution to the decision-making processes that are shaping them.

    Data collection, spatial analysis, mapping and scholarly research that informs our advocacy at the policy level, as well as our individual initiatives on the ground.

    On-the-ground fieldwork that allows Liminal and its collaborators to envision tangible solutions for a territory based on intense stakeholder engagement and data-driven assumptions.

  • LIMINAL ACT

    Implementation of strategies and catalytic services with measurable social, environmental or economic output for local communities.

What drives us?

 

Liminal was born out of the desire to promote a prosperous, equitable and environmentally responsible future for the Italian territory. We believe that this means reinforcing a model of poly-centric sustainable development that builds upon the country’s historic settlement conditions north to south.

Liminal envisions an Italy well connected by physical and digital infrastructure, where quality of life, professional opportunity and a sense of belonging are not mutually exclusive terms for the next generation; where small towns and cities are networked in ways that allow them to prosper, each in their own unique ways.

We live in an age that requires us to reassess every assumption. How we work is changing. The ways we build community are changing. The behavior of our environment itself is changing, radically. Liminal was founded with a drive to reimagine the relevance of small cities and town, and help transition them into the exciting, complicated future that lies ahead.
